As always, Fintan O’Toole is spot on. In his essay ‘The Right Amount of Crazy’ in the May 14 issue of the New York Review of Books, he explains just how infucking insane Trump is. But he also shows clearly that:
This madness, after all, is not just personal. It is structural. When the balance of power is lost and democratic accountability is replaced by a cult of the divinely inspired leader…..The remolding of America and the world through the force of personality and terror is what Trump offered the American electorate in 2024, after the madman Theory had been put into practice in the violent theater of the invasion of the Capitol on January 6, 2021. When the majority of voters decided to accept that this was just the right amount of crazy, they would have been mad not to expect an even deeper derangement.
